Our history

One relationship
at a time.

Denmark Street, London

Tin Pan Alley, London

Founded in 1972 by John Nice and Pat Seward, who launched Decca’s first ever music publishing company, Burlington Music, in 1952. From Tin Pan Alley in London, they assembled an esoteric catalogue across music genres: Top 40, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, soul, military band music and quirky novelty hits.

The intrepid expedition to the US

John and Pat were two of the very first Brit publishers to make the intrepid expedition to the US, travelling to LA, Nashville, NYC and San Francisco. They were rewarded with a treasure trove of copyrights, and longstanding relationships with industry luminaries, including the Brubecks, Clarence Selman, Daniel O’Donnell, Frank Mills, Henry Hadaway, Kris Kristofferson, Lois Van Rijmenant, Marijohn Wilkin and Mary O’Hara.

They built Valentine the way creative businesses should be built: one relationship at a time. From its pioneering beginnings, Valentine Music continues to operate on the belief that the relationship between an artist’s catalogue and its publisher is personal and consequential to the delivery of first-class rights management.

Dave Brubeck was designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, for a career that defied standard jazz conventions and spanned over six decades. He experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation and contribute to his enduring popularity and acclaim.

His diverse portfolio includes orchestral works, ballet suites, and large-scale choral pieces performed by prestigious global ensembles like the London Symphony Orchestra. Lullabies. Real Ambassadors with Louis Armstrong.

MARY
O'HARA

An Irish legend

Mary O’Hara, the harpist and singer, born in 1935 in County Sligo, has found fame across the world with performances on the Ed Sullivan show and in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall, The Royal Opera House, and the Sydney Opera House.

After a stint as a Benedictine nun at Stanbrook Abbey for 12 years, Mary embarked on a second phase of her career, and once again became one of Ireland's biggest international selling artists, releasing over 20 albums.

She was the star of her own BBC and ITV TV shows, the subject of documentaries, plays and “This Is Your Life”, and the author of three books.

Mary O’Hara’s mesmerising talent takes its enduring place in music history for her role in the revival of the folk / harp tradition that influenced a generation of Irish and international artists.

Joan Baez recalled that Mary’s records were a favourite of her and her mother’s, often reducing them to tears.

Our services

Our
Services

We pride ourselves on being an independent business, laser-focused on precision administration and offering personal responses to the complex demands of music publishing.

02

Usage Logging & Materials

We cross-reference PRO distributions and catch underpayments by carefully logging your tv / film production cue sheets.

We collate the full set of materials needed, including audio and av files as well as obligatory production / works metadata to meet the requirements of global PROs when claiming your royalties.

We can manage your Soundmouse account for you, to save you time and ensure your music is integrated into their global network, the industry standard for media reporting via fingerprinting and cue sheets. Without this technical integration, your music remains "invisible" to reporting systems, leaving your royalties at risk.

03

Forensic Analysis

Hunting down your royalty income needs relentless investigation. We follow many lines of attack, for example:

Blackbox: We investigate industry-wide unpaid royalty files to find and reclaim money earned from past usages that were never correctly matched to your account.

We tap into the 3rd party data services used and relied on by the PROs. This allows us to double-check that your music is being correctly identified and that royalties are properly connected to you.

We deploy specialist third-party fingerprinting services to monitor broadcasts, providing us with the independent evidence needed to audit and challenge PRO payout statements.

04

Set List Registrations

Reporting live performances is a critical component for collecting your royalties.

When you perform, we need your set lists to ensure they are filed and processed by the relevant PROs so your live performances are recognised and paid out without delay.

05

Global Presence

Our global network of sub-publishers are chosen carefully to uphold our exacting standards and ensure that your rights and usages are registered directly with local PROs in every territory.

06

Royalty Distribution

We issue royalty payments and detailed digital statements four times a year (end of February, May, August, and November).

Our success is tied to yours - with no entry or setup fees. We work on a percentage of collected revenue, ensuring we are constantly motivated to maximize your global returns.

Through our 24/7 Portal you can view your royalty income statements and business intelligence reports to track exactly where your royalties are originating.

07

Sync Services

With our network’s localised relationships across major media companies we proactively pitch your catalogue for sync opportunities including advertising, television and film production.

Through our secure sync portal we make your music available for discovery by media producers researching music for their projects.

For inbound sync opportunities we can act as your local team responsively managing the T&C’s and related communications around deal negotiations. This ensures you retain control of the terms while using our experience to help you maximize the commercial value of every placement.

Recent syncs include: “Take Five” in a pan-European SEAT car campaign, “The Birdie Song” in Disney’s smash hit Rivals, and “Goo Goo Muck” in the official LEGO app.
